August 11, 2008

ABSTRACT

After the disaster of the original Xbox, Microsoft put a lot of effort in designing what is probably the most sophisticated consumer hardware security system to date. We present its design, its implementation, its weaknesses, how it was hacked, and how to do it better next time.

Speaker: Michael Steil
Michael Steil has been involved with various embedded systems hacking projects, like the Xbox, the Xbox 360 and the GameCube. In 2006, he has spoken at Google about the flaws in the security system of the original Xbox.

Speaker: Felix Domke
Felix Domke is the principal author of the Xbox 360 hack and the Linux port. He has also significantly contributed to hacking the dbox2, the GameCube and the Wii, and porting Linux to the respective platforms.

May, 14 2008

ABSTRACT

Digital technology is becoming an indispensable and crucial component of
our lives, society, and environment. A framework for computing in the
context of problems facing the planet will be presented. The framework
has a number of goals: an optimal digital infrastructure, sensing and
optimising with a global world model, reliably predicting and reacting
to our environment, and digital alternatives to physical activities.
This talk will be taped.

Speaker: Andy Hopper
Andy Hopper is Professor of Computer Technology at the University of
Cambridge and Head of the Computer Laboratory. His research interests
include networking, pervasive and sentient computing, and using
computers for assuring the sustainability of the planet. He is a Fellow
of Corpus Christi College.

Andy Hopper has pursued academic and industrial careers in parallel. In
the academic career he has worked in the Computer Laboratory and the
Department of Engineering at Cambridge. In the industrial career he has
worked in senior roles for multinational companies and also co-founded a
dozen spin-outs and start-ups, two of which floated on stock markets. He
is currently chairman of RealVNC, Ubisense and Adventiq, and a director
of Solarflare.

Professor Hopper received the BSc degree from the University of Wales
Swansea (1974) and the PhD degree from the University of Cambridge
(1978). He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (1996) and of
the Royal Society (2006). He was made a CBE for services to the computer
industry (2007).

Peak oil theory states that oil will have a beginning, middle, and an end of production, and at some point it will reach a level of maximum output. It is estimated that approximately half of all oil that will be recovered, has been recovered, and oil production may reach a peak in the near future, or perhaps already has. Then what?
Google Tech Talks
December, 5 2007

DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) is an emerging IETF standard (RFC
4871) to authenticate sending domains in SMTP mail. It is designed
to be scalable, extensible, back-compatible, and adoptable without
any flag days.

This talk will cover the background of sender domain authentication
in general and DKIM in particular, details of how DKIM works, and
other issues that DKIM brings up, notably sender accreditation and
reputation and receiver policy. Sendmail’s Open Source
implementation of DKIM will also be discussed.

Speaker: Eric Allman
As Sendmail’s Chief Science Officer and co-founder, Eric Allman leads the company’s technology strategy and direction. Allman authored sendmail, the world’s first Internet Mail program, in 1981 while at the University of California at Berkeley. He continues to spearhead sendmail.org, the global team of volunteers that maintain and support the sendmail Open Source platform.

At the forefront of industry-leading trends and technology, Allman is currently a leader of the movement to adopt an international standard for Sender Domain Authentication. Allman, backed by a cross-industry group of companies (Cisco, Yahoo, PGP, et. al.), co-authored the draft specification for DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM), and submitted it to the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Before joining Sendmail, Allman served as CTO for Sift, Inc., which is now part of 24/7 Media, Inc. He was lead developer and provided a large-scale research software infrastructure on the Mammoth project at U.C. Berkeley. Allman has contributed as a senior developer at the International Computer Science Institute to neural network systems design. Allman was also Chief Programmer on the INGRES Relational Database Management System and an early contributor to Berkeley UNIX, authoring syslog, tset, the troff -me macros, and trek in addition to sendmail. For several years, he has co-authored the “C Advisor” column for UNIX Review magazine. He was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of USENIX Association and is currently a member of the ACM Queue Editorial Review Board.

Allman holds an Masters of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Google Tech Talks
May, 27 2008

ABSTRACT

Mobile devices have great potential to increase independence for people with cognitive disabilities. Besides basic communication, which is itself very important, key features include location awareness, which can be used to help with public transportation, and remote management, which allows a caregiver to manage content, such as schedule information, on a user’s device. A recent projects course at the University of Colorado developed promising prototypes on the Android platform, and suggested useful platform enhancements, especially relating to speech technology.

Google Tech Talks
January, 8 2008

ABSTRACT

For more info, see http://literacybridge.org/

Knowledge is power; but most knowledge is tied up in text. So how do the 774 million illiterate adults in the world access knowledge crucial to preventing disease, creating economic opportunity, and defending their political and human rights?

Cliff spent six weeks in a remote region of Ghana to understand rural poverty and sustainable development. He saw many impressive local organizations sharing valuable information for development; but he also experienced the inefficiency of delivering all this information in person.

In response to this problem, Literacy Bridge was founded to empower children and adults with tools for scalable knowledge sharing and literacy learning. The Talking Book Project is Literacy Bridge’s major program, developing new and affordable digital audio technology to provide vital, locally generated information and literacy training to people with limited access to either. Imagine a $5 iPod used to play locally generated podcasts, plus a decentralized, digital content distribution system that reaches villages without electricity but also enables global content sharing. Aside from the innovative use of technology, partnerships with local businesses, civic organizations, and government agencies play a pivotal role in the Talking Book Project.

During this talk, Cliff will share his observations from Ghana and discuss Literacy Bridge’s Talking Book Project.

Speaker: Cliff Schmidt
Executive Director of Literacy Bridge
